Ubisoft: Don't play Kong on the 360

King Kong RAAWR

Don't squint to see King Kong on the 360 -- play it on the Xbox instead. That's the advice from Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot, who has admitted that Ubisoft tested King Kong on HDTV screens but not standard TVs, resulting in a game that's too dark to play on normal television sets. Not being able to see where you're going is a big problem, and Guillemot admits that "When you play on an Xbox or a PlayStation 2, you start to see that it is beautiful."

Ubisoft may be able to fix the problem, but we suspect that maybe turning your TV brightness up would work instead.

1. Huh? Call me dyslexic, but I don't understand this story at all. If they tested only on HDTVs and NOT standard TVs, then shouldn't you be playing on an HDTV (i.e. the 360)? How does this make the xbox version better?

2. how said is that... the game will look better on xbox then on Xbox360... that just tells me this X360 is starting to look more and more like a rushed job and in the end...

PS3 will be the real winner of the console war... there are just so many problems with the thing, yeah it's first gen, but come on get the thing working right before you release it, I played kong in the store and parts of the screen when blue.... I was just thinking what the Fu#$ but I guess that's to be expected when you rush the games...

It's said really because I really don't see much of a improvement from xbox... maybe it's because this is first gen games, but if you ask me it's just because the system sucks... I'll wait until next year not 2006 but 2007 to decide if I need an xbox360 by then maybe some real good games will be out instead of these wack titles that really don't have a high replay value... I mean the only game on this system that is really nice is call of duty 2 and if you have a high end pc which I do... then it's much better on pc... which is just sad, so is quake 4...

so if PGR3 is all xbox 360 really has then i'm sorry microsoft but i'm not impressed at all... you can keep that thing.

3. @Crazyglues: I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that "X360 is starting to look more and more like a rushed job and in the end PS3 will be the real winner of the console war"

when PS3 actually COMES OUT, we'll be able to see who's the real winner but until it does, it's way too premature to declare it the "real" winner. besides, the fact that King Kong wasn't optimized for standard-definition television doesn't say anything about X360 as a console. It just shows how Ubisoft didn't test it thoroughly enough, probably in order to launch with the console (and also come out before the actual movie)

4. What the article (I think) is saying is that, if you don't have an HDTV don't play on the 360, as on standard TVs it is too dark. Apparently the Xbox 1 version doesn't have this problem.

So can't they add gamma controls or something?

5. It's too dark in HD as well.

6. I noticed even at 1080i on my HDTV it was dark and i had to turn the brightness up a few notches

7. I don't see why this is such a big deal. The major difference between the original and the 360 is high-definition graphics. If you don't have an HDTV then you're probably not going to see an enormous amount of difference. Perhaps your $400 would be better spent towards an HDTV...

9. I agree with #7; I've been playing on a Sony HDTV, and the game is far too dark to play. Testing should be done on CRTs (SD and HDTV), Plasmas, DLP and LCD screens, since all four major display types have very different abilities when it comes to reproducing black levels. I'd guess the King Kong developers only tested on LCD HDTVs, which have the worst black levels of the bunch (black looks like dark gray on every LCD screen I've looked at).

10. I don't have Kong, but I haven't noticed any brightness problems in general on my Sony CRT HDTV (it's a few years old now). Haven't tried on the LCD yet as it's in the bedroom.

Still, I noticed that in the setup screens there are system-wide adjustments for brightness based on the screen type. Have you guys tried that?
