CoD2 going 1080p?

Reader DJPhatFive says he stuck in his trusty old copy of Call of Duty 2 and received a mysterious update that seems to have enabled a 1080p setting in the game. Can anybody else confirm? Has the native 1080p train left the station or is this just more noise to add to the post-Fall Update confusion surrounding Splinter Cell: Double Agent?

1. Nothing happened for me. I downloaded the Fall Update earlier today (and I'm lovin it by the way). I just popped in CoD2 and it booted up without a single update message.

2. I tried changing my display settings to 1080p but when i do the screen turns black. Its a new tv that supports 1080p and it wont work. Can anyone help. I wanna see this Cod2 in 1080p

3. My guess is that this person has their boot set to the disk rather than the dashboard. They turned it on to play COD2 and got the update message and mistook it for a game update.

If I'm right I better get a point or something

4. I didn't get any update, unfortunately.

5. whitesoxfan5622,

I may be wrong but I believe 1080p is only obtainable through a VGA connection for games. Are you using component cable or VGA? It makes a difference with compatibility.

P.S: Go Chicago. Even though baseball is boring as hell.

6. footlong!,

According to the official Xbox website, the update adds
"HD 1080p video mode support over VGA and component cables."

I think you're right about the boot to disc thing, he probably just confused the two

7. footlong, you are wrong, 1080p is technically fine for everything via component, but stupid agreements force it to be locked out for DVD, HDdvd and BluRay are 1080p.

So anything is fine as 1080p over component, EXCEPT ANY disc based movies in any commerical format.

8. whitesoxfan5622,

I dunno if you've already tried this or not, but there might be some settings you have to change on the TV itself.

9. whitesox fan: what is your displays native res?

I'd go check with or someone to be sure it REALLY supports 1080p.

A lot of sets say so on the specs but they only convert 1080p to 1080i or 720p, they just mean they accept the signal. Other sets that ARE 1080p, only accept that from certain inputs. It is very sketchy at the moment out there, careful what you buy.

10. This is not true. CoD2 does not have a 1080P update... yet

11. Doesnt the 360 have global video output settings; why would the output selection be in the game interface?

Posted at 9:42PM on Oct 31st 2006 by Sagat 0 stars

12. I have the same issue as whitesoxfan5622...except once i change the resolution on my X360, the screen is split into two separate images of the dashboard. I am going to try it again in a few minutes. My LCD is a 40" Samsung that accepts 1080p over HDMI. The manual does not state 1080p as an option over component. I thought MS stated this wouldn't be an issue over component?

Posted at 9:43PM on Oct 31st 2006 by joba78 0 stars

13. If your TV doesn't support 1080p over component there is nothing MS can do about it. fulci zombi is right, you have to be carefull of what you buy, 1080p is far from an everyday feature in tvs still.

14. There is a VGA-HDMI adapter you can use to get 1080p. Enjoy!

Posted at 11:22PM on Oct 31st 2006 by Jay 0 stars

15. I tried 1080p option for fun (my tv is 1080i) and it did what joba78's did - split the dash in half, but it was still readable. This was over component

16. Thanks guys! Good thing is My LCD has a VGA and 2 HDMI inputs available. If I purchase the HD-DVD drive, I will definitely buy the VGA cable for my 360. My LCD does not support 1080p over component...which is totally cool. The games/vids look awesome either way!

17. this is I djphatjive, Thanks for spelling my name wrong. Anyway I set got the update for the dash hours before the update to cod2. So i know it was a different update. My tv is not 1080p it is 1080i highest. But it does take a 1080p signal somehow and it makes it huge on my screen. But when I full screen it it shrinks it to fit. But anyway call of duty 2 after the update shows up huge on my screen at 1080p if I don't do shrink to fit setting on my tv. So that is why I wrote in about it supporting 1080p now. Maybe not nativaly. But maybe the games itself have to be updated in order to play even at upconverting it to 1080p.

18. Tariq, Zombie,

I'm not saying either of you are wrong. I'm just saying our sources seem to conflict with eachother. mine is listed below the quote.

"Even after the software upgrade this fall, via component cables, the Xbox 360 will still only upconvert DVDs to 480p, and will play HD DVD movies at a maximum resolution of 1080i. To get 1080p output for movies, you must use a VGA cable, which is not subject to the same copyright restrictions."

Now I know the quote only references hd movie playback but you have to keep in mind that when this article was published Mircrosfot was still under the impression that 1080p could not be applied to games.

Prove me wrong and I'll thank you.

19. Full screen? Shrinking? Are you playing on a PC? I think what we have here, ladies and gents, is a case of confusion on an enormous scale. I'm going to go ahead and call "false alarm."

Posted at 11:53AM on Nov 1st 2006 by Tucker 10 stars

20. And footlong, the reason they specify the upconverting over VGA vs. Component for movies has to do with the copyright issues prohibiting upconverting via component. MS can't legally do it, so they don't.

The system will, however, apparently convert the 720p/1080i signal from games to 1080p now, and presumably *could* display games running natively at 1080p if said games were capable of rendering in 1080p on the system.

That's the real question here, and the only real issue of any importance (games-wise, anyway): will we see any games rendering at the 1080p resolution?

As of today, it looks like the answer is no, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen eventually.
