1UP clarifies Halo 3 info, new details

1UP has taken some of the leaked Halo 3 info and clarified a few mistranslations and speculations. First, the Spartan laser is more than an anti-vehicle weapon and can be used quite effectively as an anti-personnel weapon. Apparently, it's not as difficult to control as some sources thought it to be, though Bungie may still tweak it for balance. Second, the new Brute weapon, the Spiker, is sort of a cross between the needler and the SMG and it's more effective than both. The weapon shoots bright orange spikes at a very fast rate. We can't help but be reminded of the needler shown during a pre-release Halo 2 multiplayer demonstration ages ago. You know, the one that didn't suck. Third, the nail grenade is actually called a spike grenade and should be quite a departure from the plasma and frag varieties. Fourth, weapons not in use will be placed according to their type. For example, two handed weapons like rifles and shotguns will be slung over the shoulder, while single handed pistols will be kept at the hip. Halo fans will recognize that actually seeing a secondary weapon will dramatically change gameplay (no more hiding the sword or rocket launcher). Fifth, multiplayer will still be capped at 16. Obviously, this has worked well thus far, so why fix what ain't broke? Finally, the "Man Cannon," designed for fast air travel, is so hilariously named that many assumed it was a mistranslation. Nope, Man Cannon is the name Bungie gave it, and it's not likely to change. 1UP promises that there is even more info in the latest issue of EGM -- arriving in mailboxes shortly -- and all month long at 1UP itself. Rest assured we'll bring you more Halo 3 as it develops.

1. In the immortal words of Cartman "I will freeze myself until it comes out. To me, it will be as if no time has passed". (Although he was waiting for a Wii). Hopefully Halo3 multiplayer won't be over-run by racist, foul-mouth 12 year olds...

2. To hear that the 16 ONLY player system is still going to be used is a little disappointing to say the least. If you look at Resistance:FoM, it handles 40 Players, now don't get me wrong I'm a HUGE Halo 2 fan and currently have a 24 Team Battle ranking. But you have to ask yourself, would'nt a 16 vs 16 epic be a LOT COOLER?? If anyone could make this happen it would be Bungie!!

3. Yeah that's cool and everything, but I don't enjoy Big Team Battle because it's too much stuff going on, so I would hate 40 player big team battle.

4. I agree with #2 - why can't there be bigger battles? The Halo universe is huge - I was hoping for PC-esque map proportions and epic battles with more vehicles and players.

5. I'm guessing that they are going with 16 player to begin with, then after a month or two release a patch that will raise the bar a bit higher.

6. @ Kinetic Online

Doubt it.

7. Lots of games have claimed big multi-player numbers before they come out. Then they scale back the number or the quality of the experience.

I'd much rather play a 16 player game that works than a broken 40 player game.

9. I agree that 16v16 would be pretty epic (if not ridiculously hectic), but as long as Xbox Live users with slow internet connections exist, there's gonna be lag. We can't even have a 4-player deathmatch of Doom over Live without massive slowdown...

...in fact, every single 360 game I have played has had lag problems at some point, and I'm on an 8-meg line; from 3v3 Double Agent, Burnout Revenge, and Battlefield 2 (which I think was 12v12).

I think we can trust that Bungie know what they're doing, especially or the end of their trilogy.

10. Hopefully Halo3 multiplayer won't be over-run by racist, foul-mouth 12 year olds...

sadly, that's the largest segment of the LIVE demographic. the only thing wrong in that assessment is they're not all 12.

anyhow, as funny as the name "man cannon" is the idea of using yourself as a projectile weapon is pretty entertaining

11. Even though yes 16 vs. 16 would be epic you would still have a massive problem with team killing as well as remember playing on XB Connect when if you played with more tha tlike 8 people it would be unbreable i think that would be what a giant battle would be like. The shear number of sprites that would have to be rendered would slow the game down if the 12 players in the game that are stealing part of their connection speed from their team mate wouldnt.

13. or, guys, they want to nail the multiplayer just right because this is the last game in the trilogy. its no time to be experimenting with gameplay. dont talk about resistence having 40 players because that games gonna suck anyway. besides, this leaves bungie open to make a halo game in the future like battlefield with the focus on massive multiplay rather than the story.

Posted at 1:57PM on Nov 2nd 2006 by footlong! 0 stars

14. OMFG GUYS! it's 16 only becuase anymore would be chaos. Also this is their last game in this story arc. there are more games they are makiing including halo wars. Also quit your whining. I personnaly prefer this game not come out for another year so they have time to get out all the bugs. especially since its coming out March 7th, 2007. woops, wasnt supposed to say that...

15. does 1up.com know something we dont as they have the release date for halo 3 as 11/01/07 so unless bungie have told them alot more than there letting on take it with a pinch of salt
