European Emergence Day festivities begin

To all of our European readers, happy Emergence Day! It's been a long time coming, but now you can finally celebrate Gears of War with the rest of the world (we hope you enjoy all of the cheaters). Huzzah! As an extra special treat, European 360 owners (except Germany) can now download the special Emergence Day theme and picture from Xbox Live Marketplace. So, now that you finally have your hands on Gears of War, what do you think? Does it live up to the hype we Yanks have been generating? Is curb stomping everything it's cracked up to be? Leave us a comment and tell us what you think.

[Thanks, honz12]

1. I can't wait for the Amazon[] shipment to arrive; this is the game that got me to buy the 360 ( along a few other perfectly valid reasons ).

2. I picked up a copy of Gears of War today for 399 SEK (which equals €43.19 or $55,13 USD) - a fairly decent deal considering it includes 25% sales tax.

The downside? I don't own an Xbox 360 - yet. :/

3. Gear of Wars has certainly been worth the wait. The gameplay, graphics and immersive levels make it the best game available on the xbox 360 so far. Shame about the awful lag on the multiplayer games, hopefully there will release an update soon which sorts that out. A must buy.

4. It's exactly how I thought it would be, although I'm a little disappointed with the chainsaw (although that may be because I'm still getting used to the game).

The graphics aren't too shabby either. Quite looking forward to some curb-stomping and online co-op.

And after all my moaning, I was pleasantly surprised to see my free theme and gamerpic waiting for me in the game menu. :D

6. I got mine on wed thanks to and overall its a great game with some seriously awesome graphics and a decent drop in drop out co-op experience but i have to say i feel letdown by the shortness of it all.

Im not much of a gamer but I sat down for a few hours to play it on wed, and same for thurs then it was over. Sure i had it on the easiest difficulty level but still I expected a few more bosses although raam did look great even if he reminded me of some kind of intergalactic space pimp.

Ive started replaying it on the insane setting and computer controlled teammates really do suck, always getting put down so its ends up being you vs a giant horde. Im looking forward to GoW2 but until then I have the great rainbow six to play repeatedly, and if todays multiplayer demo is anything to go by the online co-op will rock. Just sucks that the eu release has been pushed to 1st dec.

7. @1

My Collectors edition arrived from at 9:40 this morning. Only I was at work and it didn't fit through the postbox so they took it away again! D'oh!!! Still, I'll pick it up from my local Royal Mail distribution center in the morning.

8. Been playing games since Pong and this has to be one of the best games ever made (if a bit short). Beautiful, immersive and compelling both on and offline...Microsoft have finnaly won the impending console war before a single shot has been fired (see the irony there American gamers?).

10. I'm really enjoying the sheer viceral nature of it all but I wouldn't recommend spoiling it by playing on Casual.

One thing I have been complaining long and hard about is that as ever, the controls are tough for us southpaws. Despite being able to swap the sticks not being able to redefine your buttons means my right hand is becoming a wasted claw (think about using the right stick to move forward and pressing A at the same time...)

I think what would be great is if someone manufactured a southpaw controller with the buttons on the left, so we have a mirrow image of what we have now. That would make my life so much easier.

11. It finally arrived. I fired it up around 10:30 this morning and have been playing ever since (I'm taking a break now and watching the DVD included in the collectors edition while I write this).

It is AWESOME! Yeah, the graphics are astounding, the sort of thing you saw as pre-rendered cut scenes in the last-gen is now happening live, at 30fps, in HD. But the graphics would be nothing if it wasn't for the gameplay. I'm generally pretty rubbish at shooters and I find myself dying regularly even on the "easy" modes in most games. What I love about Gears is the use of tactics. You really have to think your way through the levels, rather than just blasting. If you haven't played Gears yet you just won't know what I mean but if you have, you'll be aware that there are endless opportunities to flank and work around the enemies as well as the much vaunted cover system. Added to the gameplay and graphics are the perfect motion (everything has weight and substance), the amazing sound and spot-on camera movements (for example, the camera shakes when you run like you're being chased by a live cameraman who is also dodging the bullets).

The thing you finally understand when you play it is what a complete package Gears is. The attention to detail is astounding and really shows through in every twist and turn of the game. I'm looking forward to mastering the single-player campaign. Once that's done, I'll see how multiplayer feels. I can't wait.

12. UK gamer here, got Gears two days ago (lucky lucky!) Have been off sick so I've been playing it almost constantly. Now on Act 4.

What can I say? This is the best game on 360 since Dead Rising. It's probably one of the best shooters I've ever played, and trust me when I say I've played most of them.

Online seems to work fine for me, though I'm mainly concentrating on the campaign. Graphics are intense, controls are great, and the game even has some scary "Doom 3" moments, which I wasn't expecting.

In short, colour me extremely impressed.
