H3: Everybody run! He's got ... a Needler?

If you've been scouring the Halo 3 information around the web, you may have heard a few things about the needler. The needler -- a weapon that shoots slow moving, homing crystals that explode after a certain duration -- is generally regarded as the worst weapon in the Halo series. In fact, most consider it so useless that they will only pick it up as a joke or for some lucky humiliation kills. Bungie now intends to turn that around. In Halo 3, the needler is no longer dual-wieldable. Because it's now a two-handed weapon, Bungie has room to make it more powerful. We don't know exactly what's been changed -- whether the needles move faster or track better, for instance -- but we do know it's now a weapon to be feared. In the words of Bungie's KPaul:

"These factor in significantly, as once the needles are flying you're pretty much done unless you've got some cover to get behind before they reach you. Yeah, we've said it before, but this time we mean it. You will hear someone scream "OH SHEETS HE'S GOT A NEEDLER" at some point during your Halo 3 experience and for once, it will not be sarcasm."

Needler fans rejoice, come Halo 3, you'll actually have a reason to pick one up. Then again, Bungie said they were going to fix the needler last time, too. Here's hoping they keep their word this time.

1. gotta say I for one love the needler... but I still like dual weilding them better than anything then its 2 pretty streams of purple spikes going or 3 if one is from your forehead cause your triple shooting...

In short dual needlers in halo2 is my favorite weapons... look cool, hit alright if you know how to use em, and badass for beatdowns cause you can hit like 3 times in 2 seconds... people just always complain cause they dont know when and how to use the things its kinda sad.

2. I loved the needler, not so much in multiplayer, but it was kick ass.

useing 2 and emptying both crystals on a little dude n then.....wait for it.......... BOOM they blow up on the little critter....

awsome!

3. Since when was the needler weak? That was basically the only gun I could get a kill with during my time with split-screen multiplayer.

Read about this a while ago in EGM, and the Spartan Laser is awesome. (Though it pisses me off that the laser is visible.)

4. I've always had good luck with needlers...

5. I'm thinking it either will shoot very, very quickly as if 4 needlers are firing or it will shoot slowly and have a huge clip, like the fuel rod cannon or something, except with a couple dozen shots before you have to reload.

6. ... I don't know what the article is talking about exactly... though the needler was pretty useless in Halo 1 because the needles took so long to explode that you'd be dead before your opponent was, the needler in Halo 2 was an excellent weapon when doubled-up. Dual needlers fire so many needles it's ridiculous, and they explode quickly enough to make it a pretty damn effective weapon in that set up.

7. i never really like the needler that much, it was fun however when we play halo with shots, if you got killed with the needler you had to take a shot. makes the burn that much better.

8. For some reason my friends could never pick up on the fact that if you ran circles around someone with a needler they were doomed. They never understood why I could always beat them, even when they had the "best" weapon in the game, LOL.

9. the needler was my favorite weapon for a while back in the original halo days. i just loved pelting my friends with needles and seeing the delayed death.

but in the second game i wasn't so hot on the needler. duel-wielding was pretty cool, but compared to other combos it didn't do too well.

10. The best thing would be for the needles to have much, MUCH better pathfinding and tracking. Like once they're locked, they'll follow you through a freaking maze to kill you.

11. I OWNED with a Needler in MP. Just duel wield them.

12. the needler rocked in h1 and in h2.

hey guys... when ur playing against someone in split screen on ur 360, shoot some needles off and hit the guide button ;)

so looking forward to the new one, but i dont think i will like it if its now a new power weapon...

13. I always found the needler to be a very useful gun that i never had trouble with. The only weakness it had was against the flood because of the time delay and they were normally right up to you before it exploded.

P.S. It was my favorite covenant weapon in halo only to be surpassed by the brute shot's raw power in Halo 2.
