Final Fantasy XI release dated

Square Enix announced yesterday that their MMO Final Fantasy XI will be shipping soon to North America, Japan, and Europe, along with the upcoming PC expansion pack, "Treasures of Aht Urhgan." FFXI will be shipping in North America on April 18, with Japan and Europe following just two days later.

Players have been beta-testing the title for a couple weeks now, and we've heard complaints of repetitive gameplay, an agonizing install process, dated graphics, and worse. We've made a wishlist of all the things an MMO on the 360 should do if it wants our hard earned rupees, so the question is: are the FFXI beta testers out there planning on ponying up for the full version?

1. I guess "it's better than nothing" isn't a good enough excuse to buy it. I've been playing it for about 2 weeks now and man this thing is boring. Ugly graphics, too many people, killing the same damn wasps over and over, losing HP when you die. Bleh. But I'll still buy it I guess.

That is unless Oblivion kicks as much ass as it is supposed to. Here's to hopin'!

3. This game sucks balls, me and a friend teamed up to gain some xp and kill some animals and both got killed by some 'wild hare' and then I watched as the hare killed a third person and was finally killed by a forth. This sucks balls. Its too hard to get into, I do not want to waste hours building up my character to make the game playable for me.

k thanks.

4. NO! NOOOOO! I'LL NEVER BUY IT!

First of all, a USB keyboard is practically mandatory.
So three days later, once I've picked one up, I give FFXI another go, and just can't stand it.

I loved FFX, why did they have to start doing these stupid... FFX-2, FFXI, FFXII. Way to ruin a franchise.

5. I played the beta and there is no way I would pay money for this game. They would have to pay me to play it.

6. Takes up 5GB of my HDD, soon to be more with the upcoming expansion. Outdated graphics. The virtual necessity of a keyboard effectively undermining the console concept and no news yet of a subscription fee. You can probably count me out.

7. graphics-lame
gameplay-lame unless you can stick it out for a few months. at least, thats what ive heard.
monthly fee- lame, no thanks
-HOWEVER
i love the idea of mmorps on xbox, if they could make it so i dont have to sit there with the xbox controller in my hands and the keyboard in my lap i would be all about them.

8. I played it for over a week many hours a day and stopped now, will uninstall it from the HDD and free up the 5 gig it takes up if I don't play it for another week. I will not be one of the people that will pay for this "game", its more like work, not a game.

What I didn't like most about it is the very slow pace and the penalty of 300 EXP if/when you died making sure that you will spend many hours playing this game if I wanted to level up my character.

Everything in this game is slow, the fights, the levelling up, the finding your way around (very little help given to new players) and geared to making a player spend the most time in this game so that they can squeeze as much subscription time/money out of you.

The graphics even though are PS2-like at least can be displayed in the higher resolution the 360 is capable of (I use 720p) but the graphics tearing is very visible and annoying.

I could go on and on about its shortcomings but in the week I played it I enjoyed it until I realised this style of gaming is not suited to my lifestyle. In order to get anywhere I would have to spend more time out of my life that I am prepared to do.

FFXI has put me off MMORPG for a while, I would not mind giving WOW a try to see the difference but without buying the game I don't think I can try it so there is the end of it for me.

9. I have never played one single game in the FF series. Due to boredom with waiting for some better 360 titles to hit the market, I decided to install this game and see what the hype has been about for the past few years.

At first, I think the total install took close to two hours to complete. I grabbed dinner, took a shower, read a book, and caught two cat naps before this epic ordeal was finished. I can only imagine that my 360 drive must feel like it now has a brick sitting in its tummy.

Install over....now for the sign up process on PlayOnline. Well, if I knew that was going to take such an incredible long time to complete due to the various buttons, triggers, taps, bumps, flips, and switches of the controller, I would have just signed up on line before I attempted to create a NEW account via the console. (Total time now, I think I was somewhere like 2 hours into the setup and I haven't even fired up the game yet.)

Once in the world, I admit it....I was too exhausted, wet, tired and pissed to really focus on the game play. Not to mention, I had no idea of how to control using the various command menus (yup, no wireless USB keybopard here).

As I staggered around in confusion, I like to first examine the world details (lighting, ground effects, etc) and present AI. From what I have observed, it seems to be ok. However, i have not played any previous FF games so I am not sure if the graphics are re-hashed or better. I was surprised to see that there were no voice overs....wow. I mean...wow. Did that part of the development team just not show up for work?

To be honest, I will put the game through the works before Oblivion comes out. FF looks to have promise but the break or make factor for me will be 1) depth of play and 2)easy of command use. I may even pick up a keyboard to attempt this feat in all fairness.

First glance, it is fun to tinker with (minus the biblical install process) and looks promising. Will I pony up money for an online fee....hmmm...will let you know on that one.

10. Wow is this boring. I come home from working 8 hours, crack a beer and sit down to play. Wait... how did I end up working again?? This game, and I use that term loosely, is more work than fun. Pathetic manual, no in-game instructions, sparse creature spawns, xp loss on death (or KO as they like to put it).

On the plus side the game is absolutely huge, tons of skills to work on (oh there's that word again) and lots of equipment to tinker with.

I think I'm going to pass on this one. Not a horrible time killer until Oblivion. Cheers.

11. Overall the game is just outdated, and a little boring. I have found myself playing over 40 hours already, but not untill I got my hands on a keyboard.

I will say that it is an interesting game, I just feel it needs more adventure. It seems like more of a chore at times, and thats its downfall.

12. Many times I considered cutting my losses and bailing from the install process. But after 30 mins, how much longer could it take??? Bloody hours, that is how long.

Now I am not even sure how to delete the dam thing. I feel like my machines had been dirtied and infected.

13. Yeah the Install/setup process was...ughh i went out to eat during that time. But, as far as the graphics go.. NO they are not anywhere near as good anything else on the 360 but it's simply a port of a game designed for the PS2 (well it's probably taken almost directly from the pc version). The textures and everything were made 3-4 years ago, and they haven't changed them for the 360. All they did was make it scaleable for HD resolutions.

While this game was alright when it first came out on PC i'm pretty dissappointed with this game, but when are any other mmorpgs hitting the 360?

ohh well back to playing DOA4 without being able to save.

14. I enjoy the beta, however, like it has already been said, it feels like work.
First off, because of the beta being free there are literally hundreds of people roaming around at any given time. So when a monster comes up ten people swarm in an atempt to be the first to "claim" the target. (this is the only way to gain experience)

However, once you get past that, the game opens up. Problem is, most people quit after a few hours. (There is one mission where you have to kill one type of monster in one small area, and about 1 in 10 drop the item that you need to bring back. Now imagine everyone on the beta trying to get that same item, and you start to understand the frustration.)

Long story short, I'm gonna pass this one up because of the fee. I'll pick up Oblivion instead.

15. Can someone email me instructions on how to un-install this crap off my Xbox 360? Seriously, I can't figure out how to get it off the hard drive.
