GRAW southpaw mode made right?

One of the few knocks against Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is the lack of southpaw and legacy mode. GRAW lead multiplayer designer Christian Allen dropped the following hint to a poster in the Ubi forums:

Southpaw will not be available at ship. We have the message, the appropriate people have been notified.

Not sure how much you care about southpaw mode, but it would be great to see a patch that genuinely improves a game (at least for the left-handed), not just fixes something that is broken. Do you think Ubisoft was remiss in leaving this option out the disc (it was delayed afterall) or is this the way updates are supposed to work?

1. I write left handed, but why should my game controls be any different to anyone elses? The thought of it is absurd... I use a mouse in my right hand, knives and forks the correct way.. any lefties who can't cope with ordinary controls don't deserve to play! Madness!

2. Stupid lefties, always want special treatment just because they never learned to use the right (speak: correct) hand.

Haha only kidding.

3. I'd like to meet a left handed person that actually uses that mode. I can't stand it. I've always been left handed. And I've always played video games. I always learned games on their default settings.

No idea why anyone would change to the other way...

4. This is the type of thing that shows just how sloppy a game is. Same thing as COD multiplayer. Same reason I sold mine and most likely won't buy this. Updates are meant to be additional tidbits, such as levels or weopons, not something that sould've been in the game in the first place.

5. Thank God. I thought i wasnt going to be able to enjoy this game. The day they issue an update is the day I buy this game.

6. I couldn't care less about Southpaw controls.

Here is what they should really fix:

1) The tedius and time-consuming process of joining an online game. First, you have to find a game in the "SETUP" state. Then, when you hit "A" to join it, 75% of the time it says the game has already been started. Now, at this point you can't simply go back to the game list, rather you have to refresh the entire list anew, which takes up to 30 seconds. This makes the process of finding an online game to join too much trouble.

2) The game saves you in ridiculous locations. In my current game, I'm saved in the middle of a firefight behind no cover with low health...some of the time I die within seconds. Having to fight my way out of that situation every single time I die is frustrating. I almost threw my controller down.

7. I must say that Halo2 has me spoiled. I wish all games had a similar way of handling Live play. You never have to wait for a game to finish in Halo...that's so PC. At least if I'm waiting for a match to end I should be able to spectate.

But this game is a great game... both single player and live play is excellent. Very difficult single player mode...much more challenging than most games.

8. hey Reality Check, I understand there are other issues with the game, but at least you can PLAY it. we lefties are left with a game that is just unplayable. And don't start with the "ADAPT!" crap please. Tell you what, load up CoD2, and change the control option to southpaw...now feel our pain LOL.

I'll never understand all the "haters" out there that gripe because we have a legitimate issue with gameplay. Afraid that if we get controls which we are comfortable with that you'll have YET MORE people that play better than you? :)

Every game, be it sports, FPS, rpg...EVERY game should have controls that can be configed to EVERY playing style. EOS

and to Tim, the "i don't understand lefties" post, that post was a waste of space and time. go, play your games however you like, and leave your 2 cents out of things that have NOTHING to do with you.

southpaws unite! and bring back legacy too!

10. I write left handed, play golf left handed, shot with a hockey stick left handed, I throw right handed/catch right handed, but I bat like a lefty. I play video games with right handed controls. God I'm messed up.

11. "...Tell you what, load up CoD2, and change the control option to southpaw..."

first things first, i think every game should have the ability to remap every button or stick, why the hell cant it?

ok now the hate: tellin him to load up and just play soutpaw isnt the same, and ill tell u why. u, me and him have all to use normal settings, unless the few games do give u the option to change. and you change it, we dont. so we play every game with just one setting whilst u are constantly swapping between the two, or even worse, not buying the game because it lacks the feature. therefore, your only holding yourself back. get over it, it feels funny, but the more and more u do it, the faster it becomes normal like the rest of us. if u just stop playing southpaw, and play everythin normally youll adjust.

we all have to do stupid things with the wrong hands, like driving, id much rather be able to change gears with my right hand, but here in the uk u have to use your left. the clutch and break i have to operate with my weakest foot. im hugely right handed, the only thing my left is better for is openin bottles and jars strangely enough. it just becomes second nature.

get over it, adapt

13. The only hate here is towards southpaws, period. Once again, time and space was wasted for comments that has no merit. I use my left hand for PRECISION, wether it be to mouse an FPS, drive a game like burnout, or LOOK in a console FPS. I should never have to adapt just because some people are prejudiced against a southpaw, which includes a lot of game developers and a lot of people making comments here. My left hand is my dominant hand, it always will be, and that's not going to change. Even if i did "adapt" (and anyone that says that is a jackass, btw), I would never be as good of a player as I am with a southpaw config. Just because you can "get over it" doesn't mean that the rest of us can. I'm sure I don't even want to know what else you can do with both hands...I DON'T CARE! I don't care about your abilities, I don't care about your opinion, and I don't care if you could play the piano with an arm cut off...IT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME!!! What matters is, this was something for us southpaws (and forgive me, legacy users too) and it apparently has nothing to do with you. You won't understand, you refuse to understand, and I'm not here to change your mind. But the hate does have to stop. Are we lefties or lepers? Yes, I'm not going to buy the game until they fix this, it's true. My decision...my issue, and all of these "get over it, adapt, lefties are stupid" comments are a waste of time. You wanna play with the default config? Is that the way you learned? Is that what your comfortable with? Then more power to you! Go play, and let us deal with getting Red Storm to fix this game so the "minority" can play it the way they are COMFORTABLE with.

anyways, i think i've ranted enough.

14. ".I DON'T CARE! I don't care about your abilities, I don't care about your opinion, and I don't care if you could play the piano with an arm cut off...IT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME!!!"

why should we care about u then? why should we care that u need southpaw? your special is what your saying? screw the minority, scrap the ability of mapping all buttons manually. that'll teach you all muh hah ha

15. The point, as you apparently missed it, was that you are NOT really part of this discussion. You are just another gamer who has his control scheme the way he likes it. Good for you! Now go play the damn thing. This article wasn't for you, this discussion isn't for you, and this is yet another waste of space. I probably shouldn't even reply to such waste, but I just can't resist. Go play...and let daddy deal with the lack of support for control styles for ALL gamers.

16. I wish I would've known this about the game before I bought it. I can't enjoy it, I keep looking up when I want to move forward. I have to keep reminding myself that the controls are different, and by the time I react, I'm dead. Looks like I'm going to have to do a southpaw mod on my controller because this is just ridiculous. BTW: Left-handed or not, I think it just makes sense to control direction with the left side of the controller, considering every single game console created to this date has used left-sided analog direction pad or joystick for directional movement: Atari, Coleco-Vision, Nintendo, etc...buttons have always been on the right. Dual movement capabilities were added with the release of 3D games, and with that, another stick on the controller as well. Without the ability to strife, we could still simply use the left stick for both. The only reason why the right stick domitates now is because the buttons are easier to push when you are powering and strifing with your left and navigating with your right. Try running while pushing the jump button on any game that supports southpaw and you will see what I mean. So my point is that it's 2006 and we are playing these incredible games on $400 consoles. Each game we buy for our console is sixty bucks. I assume I should be able to modify the controls in ANY game if I want, when I want, the way I want. I'm sure that with the exception of southpaw and legacy, right-handed players appreciate having the freedom to switch the controls to their desired comfortability level as well. Don't hate left-handed people for wanting to be recognized. If we ADAPT then we might end up as stupid as our less-evolved counterparts.

17. "Any other righties out besides me that need southpaw in order to effectively play an fps on the Xbox or am I just an anomaly."

Yep, I'm right handed but play all FPS's southpaw. This is due to playing GoldenEye on N64 and wanting to aim with the thumb stick.

It's sad that people so so upset when southpaws want southpaw controls. What's the big deal? The majority say they don't care so why are they complaining if they don't care?!?!

BTW, tell a gay person or a black person to "adapt" cos they're different to you and they'll be a whole new issue on your hands.

18. i belive southpaws should not be left out at all.....were just as important, and for all those southpaw haters, they must have got beaten on XBL in halo or somthing by a southpaw to be so mad.
ubisoft is lame for not puting it in on 1st release, and to have a patch implementd just shows the lazyness od ubi.....how can you enjoy a game if you spend 60% adapting and 40% getting pawned

Posted at 11:44AM on May 12th 2006 by Stephen Almada 0 stars

19. Even when they do have southpaw settings in a game they don't work properly. Take for instance, Halo 2, Using Southpaw mode, try running and jumping at the same time. It can not be done. for that matter try doing anything that requires you to use the A, B, Y, X buttons while trying to move with the right thumbstick, it can not be done!. Green

I am a lefty, due to an accident I had as a kid, I lost the control of most of my right hand. Over many years I have learned to be lefthanded and I feel the pain of all lefties out there! Lefties are a minority and therefore we are not heard. That is why our Government has to create laws concerning minorities, Otherwise the masses wouldn't care just as you see here.

I have made the argument thousands of times and every single time it ends with the righties saying who cares about you lefties we rule and you don't.

Leave a game to be developed by a righty and you will get a narrowminded controller setup just like we have here for GRAW. I wanted to get GRAW (when I finally get a 360), but now I am not. You know why? Because I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY IT! I have never been able to play any of the in-store kiosk because they are all set up with default setups and I look like an idiot trying to aim with my right thumb.
