Killer app offs Canadian PM

Canadians are starting to wonder why their Prime Minister got the short end of the hockey stick when it came to which North American leaders would survive Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter:

Adrian Fernandez-Lacey, a senior co-ordinator for Ubisoft in France, said Canadians shouldn't take offence to the assassination.

The other leaders had to live to keep the game's tension high: Mexico's president needed to hang around to allow conflict with the rebels, while the U.S. president had remain alive because the elite group of soldiers charged with the rescue are American.

"Basically, for the game, the Canadian guy was the only one that we could actually sacrifice in the story," he said. "We weren't being malicious or anything like that."

In fact, it was Mr. Fernandez-Lacey who took offence at first. Because he was born in Montreal and is half-Canadian and half-Mexican, he joked with the game's creators about hitting him on two fronts.

"When they first sent the scenario to me, I said, 'Look, you're invading my country and you're killing my prime minister,' "

Poor Canucks get no respect. It's bad enough that most Americans can't name a Canadian politician. Now French game developers have deemed them expendable.

The real Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper,  was in Mexico last week meeting with Presidents Fox and Bush. Not surprisingly, he was unwilling to comment on the unpleasant fate that befell his video game counterpart.

1. It is true that mostly no Americans know who are prime minister is yet every Canadian knows who the US president is. For our countries being so closely related, Im surprised actually of the lack of knowledge. I wouldent expect you to know the president of timbuck2, but you should for your friendly neighbours up north.

As for the game being about rescuing the president of America, well thats just following EVERY war game ever made. Imagine they made a Ghost Recon 4, where the Canadian Prime minister was Kid-naped and you played as the Canadian special forces and had to rescue him. Despite the fact that the game would be just as good combat as all the other GR games, It would not sell well at all. There would be thousands of Americans who would not even play it because it did not feature the US soilders their so used to. I would actually like to play some war games as a Candian soilder for once. Heck, I would even like to play some war games as a British, German (You get to be the bad guys!!!) or other Nationalities. Im kinda getting tired always playing the American in a single player War game.

But these game companies need to tailor to numbers I guess, and the US population is like 10x larger then Canada so they need to make games that appeal to the masses I guess.

How many of you Americans would actually be interested in playing a game where you are a Canadian soilder? I dont think very many of you would.

2. As long as the game is good, who gives a rat's ass what nation the characters are from. If our Canadian brothers up north are portrayed well in a great playing game then I would definitely play it regardless. If you would like to play a war game as a different nationality than American for 2/3 of the game then pick up Call of Duty where you play as British and Soviet soldiers.

3. well let's be real here mike, in the over all scheme of things, canadian soldiers don't exist. why? because you guys don't need them. you know for sure no one is going to invade your ass (for two reasons, one being you never really do anything to make people mad, two being you're right above us, and anyone that messes with you guys, messes with us). canada just doesn't have the history that america has, as far as wars go. i don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but whatever, i'm not here to preach my feelings on war. there are games our there that allow you to play as germany, often called the "axis" powers...so you don't always have to be american! it should also be noted that most of the game developers are located in the united states, which may explain a bit more of their inclination to use america as the focal point.

4. Actually, Canadian army helped us French people during WWII... And we're quite grateful, too.
So their army does exist, and is quite useful, too.
Not being involved in endless pointless wars doesn't mean that you don't have an army. :-)

5. Woah we have an army we just use them in peace keeping missions not like the US who uses their soldiers for Peace making missions.

7. Adam, the ironic thing is this... we have more of an army than we do a real prime minister.

Stephen Harper is a right wing nut job with one hand in the oilpatch.
We have lots of soilders, and well trained at that. We just don't believe in wasting alot of money on usless weapons, nukes and helicopters.

8. well perhaps a modern combat war game with Canadian soilders would be hard to pull off, as we are mostly in peace keeping operations.

However in WW2, which many of the games are based on, Canada played a big role and fought just like the other countries. Most Americans dont even know they fought tho. They could easily make a game about it.

9. Adam Fuller - here's a brief rundown on the Canada's Military accomplishments:

WWI
-Deployed 418,000 troops between 1914 & 1918, answering a call from Britain as we were, and are, a part of the British Empire.
-Second Canadian Brigade holds off German forces in St.Julien in 1915 for three days and three nights after the trenches had been obliterated, refusing to retreat.
-During the 2nd Battle of Ypres in 1915, 6000 Canadians died defending France, turning the tide in the offensive.
-The Battle of the Somme in 1916 cost Canada 24,000 lives, but confirmed Canadian troops as some of the World's best, and gained them respect and a reputation as hard hitting and fearless.
-Canada went on to capture Courcelette, a major part of the Somme offensive.
-In 1917, Canada captued Vimy Ridge, something our French and British brothers had failed to do, and was our greatest victory in the War.
-A Canadian, Roy Brown, shot down the Red Baron.
-233,000 Canadian dies in WWI.

WWII
-From 1940 to 1941, Canada was the largest Allied Military Force after France fell to Germany. Yes, we were there first.
-140 Canadian pilots flew in the Battle of Britain, shooting down close to 80 Germans.
-Canadians were among the first troops to fight the Japanese, many were mistreated POW's and died from malnutrition.
-Canada made up 80% of the fighting force in the Battle of Dieppe of 1942, at the time was the biggest offensive against Hitler's Europe.
-25% of the defending forces in Malta were Canadians.
-The Royal Canadian Air Forces flew the missions over the beaches during D-Day, and we had 14,000 troops on the ground during the offensive.
-80% of the ecort convoys in the Atlantic Offensive were Canadian.
-Bombing missions cost the lives of 10,000 Canadians.

That's just scratching the surface. More recently:

-516 Canadian soldiers died in the Korean War.
-Thousands of Canadian soldiers VOLUNTEERED to fight alongside the US in Vietnam.
-For the first time since Korea, Canadian troops were sent abroad offensively during the first Gulf War.

Additionally, we have led Peace Keeping missions in Kosovo, Haiti, Afghanistan, and on and on.

I know you weren't looking for a history lesson, but I thought you should know some of our accomplishments based on your statement. Finally, did you know that a Canadian wrote "In Flander's Field" which is recited at pretty much every war memorial around the World to this day (ie: Veteran's Day, Remembrance Day.)

Also, to tie this in, I'd say some of the above would make for a pretty damn compelling video game.

10. If I'm not mistaken, Canada has some pretty bad-ass special-ops. Anyone know what they're called? (no, not mounties!)

Posted at 11:23AM on Apr 4th 2006 by C. Grant 0 stars

11. Mr.Grant, I believe you are referring to the JTF2 (Joint Task Force 2)?

We never hear much of what they do because its so hush hush, but I expect Canada is much more active in wars than our government lets on.

http://www.dcds.forces.gc.ca/units/jtf2/default_e.asp

PS. As for our PM, Harper isn't so bad, its a nice break from the liberals after 14 years. As well, even our right is still left to the states, lol.

It happens at the start of the game so it not really a spoiler cause after that you have to finish the entire game which after that is 98% left to finish it!

13. Having to apologize for offing a prime minister in a videogame is the dumbest thing I've ever read.

As to the first poster. I couldn't tell you one Canadian prime minister.

14. well clearly (perhaps not as clearly as i was intending) i was exaggerating to make a point. yes, they have cowboys in los angeles, but if a developer was going to make a western themed game, they would probably have it take place in texas...get my point? i most certainly wasn't trying to put down all of canada's accomplishments, i just know that as a country canada places FAR less emphasis on the importance of a military than the united states does. and i would imagine that the most important factor here is that most people that buy the games are american, so it would make sense for the developers to cater to us. not saying it's fair, or proper, but that's just how it is. i wasn't trying to be a wanker, i love canada, i live in vermont and am about 2 hours from montreal, i visit all the time! :D

15. 1812 - Defended country against invading americans, burned down presidents residence (grey house) which was then repainted white (i've spoken to somebody in the american army about this, and all they are taught is "in 1812 there was a war". We stopped the americans from owning canada.

16. They're not taught the war of 1812?

Hehe- that was a good year.

.....I kid, I kid!

Posted at 4:55PM on Apr 4th 2006 by Gamer_Domeni 0 stars

17. Re: War of 1812, that is absolutely correct. We are taught, "It was a small war, there was a fire or something, the first lady saved a bunch of paintings! yay! And then we killed a few French people or something, but we didn't lose any land so it was ok."

...in a nutshell, anyway. It's a shame that it takes until college to get around to actually learning anything more, and then that's only if we take initiative to do so. Our education system is morbidly horrible compared to some others in the world.
