First impressions: Too Human

The big issue with Silicone Knight's Too Human is going to be the camera. It's completely controlled by the game, and you have to fight the urge to try and swing it around with the right analog stick when it gets in an awkward spot. It also likes to take a wide angle view leaving your human looking like an ant on the battlefield. The game puts you in the role of an Unreal Tournament-type warrior with the ability to make some pretty colors with a sword. You can bust out combos with the right stick and take out waves of insectoid enemies or dual wield a pair of laser guns and blow them away. The combo action is supposed to be super-deep but it didn't feel that way when I played. Pressing B at certain times  launches your most powerful attack, which looks cools but unleashes a looong canned sequence.  I assume you unlock more moves as you progress. The framerate hitched when things got crazy.

Not sure why I keep thinking of this game as an RPG when it's the total opposite. Maybe the title is a little too esoteric. I'd call it a sci-fi 99 Nights with a little less foot traffic.

2. I was really looking forward to this game, but to be completely honest, I must say my impressions after watching videos aren't good.

It doesn't look nearly as good as I thought it would (I know that's probably due to the camera recording). I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

3. Ha. Silicone Knights. Sounds like a medieval-themed strip club.

4. What was all that I hear?

Dennis Dyack claiming this would be THE Revolution in gaming?

Dennis Dyack claiming that this would be THE first true epic game to rival hollywood?

Dennis Dyack claiming that EACH of the games in this trilogy would cost 80 - 100 million dollars to make?

Dennis Dyack claiming that this game couldn't have been implemented in any way shape or form until the Xbox360 arrived?

Dennis Dyack claiming he'd built directly upon the gaming foundations of Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto themselves?

I saw a video of this, and in my opinion Heavenly Sword appeared far more impressive, and I don't even care about that game.

I mean, maybe they can convince people to buy the first game, but the second, and then the third? It's early yet, but my Nostrodamus like powers say no.

It's sad. And MS continues to foot the bill. I still wonder how much PD0 cost them.

5. Uh, you guys do know that it's Silicon (like the element), not Silicone (like the breast implant gel), right? Just thought I'd mention it again.

6. The first teaser trailer looked great, but the E3 footage (available on Xbox Live) really turned me off this game.

I had high hopes for Too Human as I loved Eternal Darkness on the GameCube.

Unfortunately it's starting to feel like everything about this game was overhyped. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, and I sincerely hope I am, but breaking it down...

The graphics didn't blow me away. The original teaser trailer looked better which makes me think it was 'engineered' in-game footage rather than actual gameplay footage. There were some big collision detection issues (which could be sorted out by release) but it's concerning that they are in there at all.

My next biggest concern is the camera. Perhaps it'll pan out OK , but at the moment there were a number of shots that look just far too zoomed out - after playing EVE I know combat needs more than watching dots buzzing round each other.

Gameplay is the biggest concern of all. A number of people who have got hands on with the title described it as little more than kill X number of enemies, move on, repeat. So if that's the gameplay then I can only wonder where the 'epic-ness' of the game lies... it takes more than graphics; just because something is big and looks cool doesn't mean it's 'epic' and cut-scenes.

If anything, Too Human is starting to remind me of those interactive movie titles that appeared years back.

Finally as Ken mentions.. for some reason I keep thinking of this game as an RPG.. which could open up the question... are the only truly epic games RPG's?
